9345 2021-09-17 08:52:54 2024-05-02 02:30:01 The Journey of Little Charlie (Scholastic Gold) 1 9780545156677 1 9780545156677_small.jpg 8.99 8.09 Curtis, Christopher Paul Little Charlie is but a 12-year-old sharecropper’s son. When his father dies, Charlie is bribed to join a cruel slave catcher on a mission to Dee-troit for two runaways. The journey is bitter, and the Cap’n he accompanies is evil, lying to everyone along the way. Charlie desperately needs the money but does not trust the Cap’n. On his journey Charlie learns of the brutal punishments for slaves, but also sees the fruits of escape from the slave’s son. When they are caught, what should Charlie do?

Note: The slaves are always referred to as darkies or slaves. One the Cap’n calls a “gorilla of a man.” There are about three references used on one occasion each: piss, fart, arse.

When Charlie is captured, both he and Cap’n face a riotous crowd who beat them senseless and strip them bare, Charlie is described as being “just a boy with no hair on his body”. In addition, the punishment of “catter-wauling” is briefly described. The language of the book is very rural Southern with gilded letters throughout giving it a lovely Southern flavor, but this COULD create reading issues. Recommend youngest readers be 7th to 8th grade. 2024-05-01 00:00:02 7.50000 5.20000 0.80000 0.52000 000403618 Scholastic Inc. 9489 2021-10-21 10:27:56 2024-05-02 02:30:01 The Road to Wherever 1 9781250833112 1 9781250833112_small.jpg 8.99 8.09 Bradley, John Ed After eleven-year-old June Ball’s dad disappears without so much as a goodbye note, June’s mother sends him on the road with his adult cousins, mechanics Thomas and Cornell Ball. The Balls are “Ford Men”; their calling in life is to restore old Ford cars?and only Ford cars?that no longer run. And so begins a summer traveling the highways and byways of America, encountering busted-up Fairlanes, Thunderbirds, and Rancheros. They also encounter the cars’ owners, who sometimes need fixing up, too. June doesn’t understand his cousins’ passion for all things Ford. But at every turn, June realizes that this journey is about more than giving neglected classic cars some much-needed TLC?there’s room to care for the broken parts of humans, too.

There is a bit of potty humor (flatulence mostly) and of course while camping they are building a privy at each stop. June also kisses the girl he meets, but no passion. This book reminds us of the movie "Second Hand Lions."

Great story of maturity and development of compassion for others. 2024-05-01 00:00:02 7.68000 5.28000 0.77000 0.49000 000391504 Square Fish Q Quality Paper 2022-05-10 288 p. ; Teen - 5th-8th Grade, Age 10-13 BK5-8 Lower readability, but more appropriate for middle grade readers 103 2 5 0 0 ING 9781250833112_medium.jpg 0 resize_120_9781250833112.jpg 0 Bradley, John Ed 4.7 In print and available 1 1 1 0 0 1 0 1 2021-10-21 10:37:41 0 90 0

However, a strange man calling himself Second intervenes, and nothing in the sixteenth-century colony is as it should be—at least according to history and the time travelers' experiences.

As Andrea rediscovers her family history, Jonah and Katherine attempt to keep from generating damaging ripples throughout history, a challenge that grows more difficult as confusing scenarios play out. Is history more important than family? Does what we know, or think we know, of the past have possible alternatives? From questions surrounding daily life to questions of cosmic importance, Haddix once again provides a rollicking adventure that insists readers engage, ponder, and make decisions. An enthralling experience that will captivate readers, both eager and reluctant. Some content makes this a good choice for ages 12+. Its unusual plot—chock-full of stunning detail and all things unexpected—and its strikingly real characters, draw readers into the story's emotion and the authentic "growing up" struggles it personifies. Each character offers a deep and differing look into the struggles kids face as they mature and, thrown together on an unlikely adventure, the four adolescents show just how powerful true friendship can be. With strong themes of being true to yourself, accepting the consequences of actions, and learning to see others for who they really are, this fast-moving, action-packed adventure begs a great discussion.

While this story is full of magic and clearly fantasy, its characters, their emotions, and the situations they face are so realistic that it provides an authentic springboard for some important discussions among older readers. This is a rare book that many different kinds of readers will enjoy and teachers can use to teach or reinforce important lessons about growing up in an authentic format. 2024-05-01 00:00:02 G true 7.70000 5.30000 0.94000 0.66000 000054518 Puffin Books Q Quality Paper 2010-03-23 384 p. ; BK0008487743 Children's - 4th-7th Grade, Age 9-12 BK4-7 Rhode Island Children's Book Awards | Nominee | Grades 3-6 | 2010 Character-driven 105 5 5 1 0 ING 9780142414330_medium.jpg 0 resize_120_9780142414330.jpg 0 Law, Ingrid 7.0 In print and available 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 2016-06-15 14:41:25 0 204 0
